How to Stop Constant Fights With Your Partner
Reviewed by Dr. Meera Kulkarni, M.Phil Clinical Psychology12+ years' experience
Why do couples keep having the same fight?
Couples often repeat the same fight because the real need underneath — feeling respected, heard or safe — never gets addressed. The topic changes, but the pattern stays. Naming the pattern together takes away some of its power.
How do you stop fighting with your partner?
These steps help many couples calm arguments and talk more kindly.
- Notice and name your fight pattern together.
- Take a 20-minute pause when emotions are high.
- Use 'I feel' instead of 'You always'.
- Listen and repeat back what you heard.
- Agree on one small change, then try it.
When do constant fights need professional help?
Seek help if fights repeat every week, include insults or contempt, or leave either of you afraid. Couple counselling can help you break the cycle. If there is any violence, please seek safety first.
